RÉSUMÉ : Vaincue en finale du RSEQ, Ottawa (3e) tourne ses espoirs vers le championnat national U SPORTS
L'équipe de rugby féminin de l'Université d'Ottawa foulait le terrain Matt-Anthony pour la dernière fois de la saison 2024-2025. Accueillant le Rouge et Or de Laval en finale du RSEQ, les Gee-Gees cherchaient à défendre leur titre d'association contre leurs plus grandes rivales.
Les Gee-Gees ont connu un fort début de match malgré l'absence de leur demie d'ouverture, Aurora Bowie, qui allait plus tard recevoir le titre de joueuse de l'année du RSEQ. Elle était remplacée par Victoria Hough, qui a mené le jeu pour aider les Gee-Gees à prendre une avance de 19-5 à la mi-temps.
« Je veux être là quand on gagne, je veux être là quand on perd, je veux être avec mon équipe tout le temps », a déclaré Bowie lorsque questionnée sur son incapacité à disputer cette rencontre. « C'est difficile à regarder, mais je suis heureuse de pouvoir apporter mon soutien et ma contribution depuis les lignes de côté. »
Tylo Borsboom (9') et Leigha Stiles (13', 27') ont marqué des essais en première demie.
Laval a accentué le rythme en deuxième demie, montrant pourquoi elle est la championne en titre des U SPORTS. Le Rouge et Or a mis beaucoup de pression sur les Gee-Gees, réduisant l'avance de l'équipe locale à 19-17.
À la 59e minute, l'avantage a basculé en faveur de Laval. Réussissant ensuite un botté de pénalité, le Rouge et Or a pris une solide avance. Avec un score de 25-19 et 20 minutes à jouer, la tension a monté.
Leigha Stiles s'est imposée pour trouver l'en-but, puis Hough a réalisé la transformation pour redonner les devants aux Gee-Gees 26-25. Laval était en possession du ballon dans les derniers instants du match.
Elle s'est positionnée pour effectuer un botté de pénalité. Sa réussite scellerait l'issue du match. Le ballon est passé à gauche de la cible, mais au lieu d'un coup de sifflet qui aurait permis aux Gee-Gees de célébrer, une mauvaise communication a donné à Laval une dernière chance de marquer.
Laval n'a pas laissé passer cette chance et a remporté le championnat du RSEQ par la marque de 32-26.
« Ç'a été un match difficile pour l'équipe aujourd'hui, mais ce n'est pas encore fini, a déclaré Bowie. « Avec le championnat national, nous avons encore beaucoup à espérer. Nous avons bâti une solide équipe au cours de la saison et nous avons encore bien des choses à montrer lors des trois prochains matchs. »
Les Gee-Gees se rendront maintenant à l'UPEI pour y disputer le championnat national U SPORTS du 31 octobre au 2 novembre.
